The Great Gatsby
INTRODUCTION
During chapter 7 of Gatsby, Nick and Gatsby go to Tom and Daisy’s house where they lounge with them and Jordan for the afternoon. They drink and spend time with one another and as the afternoon stretches towards evening everyone decides to go to the Plaza Hotel. Gatsby and Daisy take Tom’s Blue Coupé to the Plaza Hotel while Nick, Tom, and Jordan take Gatsby’s yellow Rolls Royce. On their way, Nick, Tom, and Jordan stop for gas at George Wilson’s (Tom’s mistress's, Myrtle’s, husband’s) shop where they learn that Wilson has been told that Myrtle is having an affair, though he doesn’t know who with, and is planning to leave town. While at the hotel everyone makes drinks even though the story takes place in 1922 during prohibition which lasted from 1920-1933. Once at the hotel, it becomes clearer and clearer to Tom that Daisy is in love with Gatsby and not him which causes Tom to eventually explode, yelling at Daisy and Gatsby. Daisy eventually admits that while she once loved Tom she also loves Gatsby. Leaving the Plaza Hotel for the Buchanan’s home, Gatsby and Daisy take Tom’s car again while Nick, Tom, and Jordan take Gatsby’s car. On their way home, Nick, Tom, and Jordan come across the scene of a motor accident where someone had been fatally hit in a hit and run. This death impacts all of the characters especially Tom and Gatsby as it sets in motion the events for the resolution of the book.
Throughout this chapter, Fitzgerald writes about the creation of a more modern culture around the double standards around gender and marriage as well as a more modern culture around marrying for money and the difference between love and money. He also acts as a stylistic rulebreaker by switching the roles of villain and hero.
